Thinking About Fantasy Part 4b: Placing Race
Ok. Now that the abstract discussions about what races are is done with, I can actually offer some advice about what to do with/about them.
1. I don't know what the infatuation with them is, but elf subtypes are everywhere. We've got High Elves, Low Elves, Medium Elves, Wood Elves, Stone Elves, Dark Elves, Plastic Elves, Sleazy Elves, Quantum Elves, Porn Elves, Half-Elves, Full Elves, Overflowing Elves, Fake Elves, Short Elves, Nature Elves, Christmas Elves, Spore Elves, Dead Elves, Dread Elves, Dear Elves, Deer Elves, Ear Elves, Sphere Elves, Spear Elves, Clear Elves, Air Elves, Army Elves, Navy Elves, Spice Elves, Dream Elves, Curiosity

Thinking About Fantasy Part 0: Fantasy
I've been thinking a lot about fantasy worlds recently, what with my intent to join the D&D club, the moderate success of Elemental: War Of Magic (the first game I ever beta-tested), and my introduction to AP Physics. And I've discovered something that annoys me in most of the worlds I've encountered- they're too frakking realistic! Despite the magic and dragons and whatnot, at the end of the day the worlds of Paolini and Wardell and all the rest still revolve around their suns in solar systems, and are made up of quarks and electrons. They're just not fantastical.
I don't like that. It was novel at one point, when not everybody was doing it

"I just thought you'd like to know, we received a broadband transmission from Beijing an hour ago." Commander David Green's hologram stood in front of Mo'at's desk, leaning slightly on his reconstructed leg. She'd created his position shortly after the war- Arzethian may have avoided giving Tactical Branch any central leadership figure, but Mo'at liked having one specific person to order around. "The Neo-Maoists have driven out or killed every Ameri

Trudy Chacón had already fallen back as far as she could go. The link centers were in the most protected part of Hell's Gate... and the military was just outside. If they got in, the five unconscious Humans in the link units would be dead in a matter of minutes. She lobbed a grenade out the open doorway, but the explosion held Donaldson's forces back for only a second- then an Army rifleman was standing in front of her. She bashed him over the head with the Maxim Gun, cu

The section of walkway in front of Trudy exploded, the screams of wrenched metal sounding strangely muffled inside her breather mask. She readied the mini Maxim Gun in her hands, but the tank in front of her was already preparing for another shot. She sprinted deeper into the hangar section and took cover behind an Equalizer service structure, a moment before the low wall she had been hiding behind was torn to scrap by a mortar round. She had no idea where the rest of her squad wa

Taymalak loved the Vindicator, loved it so much that he wondered if he would ever want to fly a regular gunship again. If he couldn't use it all the time he would understand, and he supposed if that happened he could go back to his Equalizer because any time in the air was better than nothing, but... nothing he'd ever experienced compared to this.
Pulling into a sharp climb, Boyscout looped up and over the assembled Tactical forces, never bothering to spin right-side up as h

Sigma Team's stealth chopper was piloted by a short, heavyset woman with a deep Louisiana accent. Sargent Chacón didn't realize how much she missed having Boyscout at the controls until he wasn't there any more. Despite her misgivings, they managed to touch down safely and quietly on the shore of the small, oil-black lake that was their designated landing point.
Trudy was the first of her trike team to set her matte-black boots in the jungle mud. She carried a lot more gear than she was used
